The name was originally a contraction of Joint Academic NETwork but it is now known as Janet in its own right.
Later, a few universities in the US linked their computers in a network to form the Joint Academic Network ( JANET ).
It developed JANET, the UK's joint academic network, which provides computer network and related collaborative services to UK education and research, including further-and higher-education organisations and the UK Research Councils.
Gateways existed from EARN to the ARPA Internet ( ARPANET, MILNET, NSFNET, CSNET X25Net ), CSNET, UUCP, JANET ( Great Britain's Joint Academic Network ), and more than 10 other national academic and research networks.
